Prosciutto is Italian naturally cured ham, generally sliced thin and served uncooked. The two most popular prosciutti in Italy are Prosciutto di Parma and Prosciutto San Daniele from Fruili in Italy’s northeast. Both varieties are now available in the United States.
Sliced prosciutto is often served as an antipasto, wrapped around a breadstick. In summer the savory flavor of prosciutto is paired with a sweet melon such as honeydew or cantaloupe.
Prosciutto is also served on panini, in sauces and in pasta fillings.
