Creating a Festive Holiday Table Setting

Creating a Festive Holiday Table Setting

The holidays in Tuscany are marked with hearty laughter, soulful tales and toasts to good friends, loving family and a bright future. Some of the best memories are relived and new ones created at the holiday dinner table. So make it warm and inviting, festive and cheerful. Try these tips to add an Italian accent to your celebrations this year!

Get festive without going over the top. One of the hallmarks of Italian dining is simplicity. Fancy crystal and fine china are lovely, but not necessary to enjoy your holiday feast or to create an elegant atmosphere. Small touches of luxury make the table fun and exciting, but the Waterford glasses might make guests afraid to raise a New Year’s toast.

Remember your meal is the star. Set the tone with decorative items that enhance the food, put your guests at ease and bring out the cheer in everyone. Glass or crystal jars with naturally green and red items, such as cranberries, olives or red grapes compliment a lace tablecloth. Festive gold and silver holiday decorations make a beautiful, yet simple, centerpiece. Keep your centerpiece low and contained so it doesn’t obstruct the food or your guests view of each other.

Big cheer comes in small packages. Small gestures add a personal touch to holiday entertaining. Consider leaving a small gift at each place setting—perhaps an Italian chocolate, a favorite Italian recipe rolled into a scroll tied with red and green ribbons or a card with a simple Italian phrase such as “Buon Appetito!” or “Mangia!”

Make it stress-free. Set the table in advance. Try some fun or clever napkin folding techniques. They’ll get guests talking. If you’re using candles, put them in the freezer a few hours before your dinner. That will help them drip less. Be original. Be unique. Most of all enjoy your friends and family brought together by your delicious holiday meal.
